Charles J. Johnston, Artist
“I have no fancy words for what I do. I just paint and sculpt
according to my feeling for the subject I’m interpreting.”

A Lifetime of Art I grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, and fought in the end of the Korean War. I used the GI Bill to go to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. From then on art was an integral part of my life and careers: curator of exhibits for Science Museum of Minnesota; interpretive specialist on the National Planning Team of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and artist-naturalist at a nature center linked to the Science Museum.

Following a Passion
In retirement, I’ve combined my passions for art and the West. I roam the landscapes of the Southwest, Oregon, and Alaska seeking to interpret nature in sketches, paintings, and sculpture as true as possible yet expressed with my own vision.
In 2007, I was fortunate to be chosen as an Artist-in-Residence at the Grand Canyon, North Rim.
